The Art Show is conducted over the Queen's Birthday long weekend each June and is the Brigade's major fundraising activity. Our show attracts around 350 entries each year and all are available for sale. Entries are received from artists both local and not quite so local. We often have some entries from interstate and the work exhibited is generally of a very high quality.

The Belgrave Fire Brigade receives a commission for each artwork sold. All proceeds of the Art Show go towards the purchase of equipment that helps us ensure that we maintain the capacity to protect our local community.

The Champagne Opening of the Art Show will be held on Friday 9th June when the sponsors will present the category winning artists with their awards. The Show continues over the long weekend and a gold coin donation will see you well provided with a cup of tea and fresh homemade scones with jam and cream. While there is a $15 door charge for the Friday Night Champagne Gala, entry to the show on Saturday 10th, Sunday 11th and Monday 12th June is free,

There are 5 award categories which are sponsored by local businesses. Prize money ranges from $400 to $700 and as the paintings are not acquired by the sponsor, you have the opportunity to purchase a prize winning work of art.

The categories are:

This award is presented to the best traditional work of art in the show. It is open to any medium and honours Jack Montgomery.

Since 1947 Jack Montgomery had spent much of his life adventuring in remote, arid regions of the world including Australian deserts, where his solo expeditions by pushbike, camel and Land Rover had given him a sound knowledge of the outback.

His ideology was one of self-imposed hardship and as a nature lover challenging the desert elements, he found atmosphere and inspiration together with unique subject material.

Graduating as a qualified art teacher in 1947, he commenced exhibiting his paintings interstate and overseas. Jack was a teacher at the Ferntree Gully Technical School and had a studio and art school at his home in Upwey until his death in 2001.

During the late 1960's Jack pushed for an art society in the Dandenongs to assist artists and give them a meeting place where they could hold exhibitions. Thanks to the efforts of artists like Jack, there are now several art societies and many galleries operating throughout the Dandenong Ranges.

Jack Montgomery assisted the Brigade each year with the Art Show, giving valuable advice and assistance. The Jack Montgomery Award for the best traditional artwork in any medium is presented each year to honour his service to local artists and Belgrave Fire Brigade.
